As the title says, this is very much a work in progress of the Urban Threads steampunk clock design…
I’ve not done anything like this before, in case anyone was wondering why the stitches on XII are such a mess! The main inspiration for starting it was that I mentioned a while ago how very much I miss hand sewing because my ludicrously sensitive skin seems to react so badly to something in the needles. Yes, even the hypoallergenic ones! Enter Vena Cava Design, who very kindly got in touch and asked if I’d like to try a new range of needles she had in.
The needles in question are the Black Gold range made by Clover. Because sewing pins set my skin off too, embroidery seemed the best way to properly test them out. It’s taken hours to get as far as I have with this. Many tens of hours! All without a single hint of allergic reaction from my skin. HURRAH!!!
There’s still the hands to work in the darkest brown, then I’ve a nice champagne coloured thread to work the rest in. I’m so happy with how it’s turning out, I might also unpick that squiffy XII panel and redo it. Or I might embrace my imperfections and leave it as is. I haven’t decided yet…
Meanwhile, so happy am I to have hand sewing back on the menu, I’ve a very silly little project in mind as part of my parents’ Yule gift, and am taking a break from the clock to embroider Yule cards for friends and family. Oh how I’ve missed this!

The clock is amazing! Totally jealous! I want one!
I am so glad you found needles that overcome your sensitive skin! I have sensitive skin too, and it can be hell!
Thank you! Urban Threads do such fabulous designs.
I’ve always had delicate skin, but I’ve no idea why it became quite so sensitive. Such a treat to have hand sewing back on the menu after all these years!
